A

ABHYANGA – A traditional Ayurvedic massage where warm oil is applied to the entire body, from the scalp to the feet, for relaxation and healing.

ACUPRESSURE – An-old Asian therapeutic method based on ancient Chinese and Japanese medicine, practitioners apply finger pressure to particular body spots to alleviate pain, reduce discomfort, avoid tension-related illnesses, and improve overall health and wellbeing.

ACUPUNCTURE – Based on Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is a procedure that involves carefully inserting needles at predetermined body spots from the meridians, in order to treat illness, reduce pain, and balance the body’s energy systems.

AMMA THERAPY – A therapeutic system that uses oriental medical principles to assess and treat imbalances in the body’s energy system to promote physical, emotional, and energetic health.

ANAEROBIC – Exercise that does not rely on oxygen intake, such as weightlifting and bodybuilding, where the intensity exceeds the body’s capacity to take in oxygen.

ANCESTOR WORSHIP – A practice in which the spirits of deceased family members are honoured and invoked, based on the belief that they influence the lives of the living.

ANGEL GUIDANCE – A spiritual practice where one connects with angelic energies to get advice and insight, often using Angel Cards, to remove obstacles and enhance intuition.

ANIMISM – The belief that all things, both living and non-living, contain a spirit or force that shapes their characteristics and actions, including both good and bad elements.

ANTHROPOSOPHICAL MEDICINE –It is a holistic procedure approach to care that combines spiritual science and traditional medicine. It is a person-centred approach that evaluates a person’s entire being, including their physical form, vitality, spirit, and soul. All anthroposophical treatments are designed to increase the patient’s powers of self-healing, with emphasis on restoring the balance of bodily functions and strengthening the forces of individuality and autonomy in the organism. The goal of treatments is to create self-healing by re-creating equilibrium and boosting uniqueness.

APPLIED KINESIOLOGY –A methodology to identify muscle imbalances in the body by testing muscle strength. Rebalancing therapies include lymphatic massage, acupuncture meridian stimulation, nutritional support, and emotional release therapy.

AROMATHERAPY – Utilises essential oils obtained from plants and herbs to treat infections, skin diseases, stress, and immune deficiencies. Aromatherapy has medical applications in countries like France and is widely recognised throughout Europe.

ART HEALING – Utilises creative processes like drawing and painting to help control emotions, decrease anxiety, and create mental wellbeing.

ASHTANGA YOGA – A physically intense yoga practice featuring six progressively challenging series, ideal for experienced practitioners seeking a structured, dynamic routine.

ASTROLOGY – The study of celestial interactions among planets, stars, and astrological signs to understand human evolution. Astrology investigates how these components shape human evolution, with each Sign representing a distinct stage of growth and development. The relationships between them and their interactions are mathematically based, and Astrology studies these mathematical cycles. Each Sign represents a different aspect of the whole human with Aries starting the cycle, corresponding to the Self, and Pisces completing it, signifying the mass unconscious of all mankind. In between, each other Sign carries the energy of a different phase of mankind’s evolution within the universe.

AVAGAAHA – A traditional Ayurvedic treatment using herbal decoctions poured over the body to heal and restore balance.

AYURVEDIC MEDICINE – This technique blends natural medicines with a customised approach to health. Practiced in India for the past five thousand years, Ayurvedic (meaning “science of life”) is a comprehensive system that combines natural therapies with a highly personalised approach to treatment of disease. BALNEOTHERAPY – A therapeutic treatment involving bathing in mineral-rich thermal waters, used for chronic skin and musculoskeletal conditions.

BASTI – An Ayurvedic therapy where medicated oils or herbal decoctions are directed through the colon as an enema to cleanse and tone the muscles.

BIOELECTRIC NEUROREGULATION – A therapy using electric signals on the skin to accelerate neural responses, aiding in muscle relaxation, pain relief, and recovery from persistent conditions.

BIO-ENERGETIC CHECK-UP – A high-tech screening of the body’s energetic state using Resonance Analysis Technology, providing insights into the health of internal organs and systems.

BIO-ENERGETIC TREATMENT – A treatment that involves the application of personalised bio-energetic signals to restore the body’s energetic balance via electrodermal points.

BIOFEEDBACK® – Quantum biofeedback is a computerized energetic device that detects and assesses imbalances in the body. It works by reducing the stresses in a body at the electro-magnetic level caused by toxins, hormones, nutrient deficiencies, food, allergies, parasites, environment, emotions, genetics, and lifestyle. The system searches for stress patterns in the body and then directs appropriate holistic therapies to help the body correct any imbalances found.

BIOPHYSICAL EVALUATION – A non-invasive methodology of assessing the body composition, including fat and muscle percentages, and provide personalised nutrition and lifestyle recommendations to improve health and wellbeing.

BODY BIOIMPEDANCE ANALYSIS – A technique to measure body fat and lean mass by sending a low electrical current through the body to assess tissue composition.

BODY COMPOSITION ANALYSIS – A methodology for evaluating the body’s core components (fat, protein, water, minerals) to get a more accurate understanding of the overall health and fitness.

BODY CONDITIONING – A routine procedure that might combine exercises for strength and flexibility and utilises both strength-training equipment and floor exercises with the focus program on overall conditioning of the body.

BODY ICOONE – A treatment that combines mechanical massage, laser thermal effects, and LED energy to enhance skin elasticity, reduce scars, and create skin vitality.

BODY-ORIENTED PSYCHOTHERAPY – A therapeutic procedure that integrates physical techniques as massage, movement, and breathing exercises to address emotional issues and create mental wellbeing.

BODY SCULPTING – Fitness program that utilises weight, flexibility, and endurance training, although not running or jumping, to shape hips, thighs, upper arms, and buttocks without creating bulk.

BODYWORK THERAPIES – They include massage, deep tissue manipulation, and energy balance, all of which aim to enhance the structure and functionality of the body. Bodywork in all its forms helps to reduce pain, soothe injured muscles, stimulate blood and lymphatic circulation, create deep relaxation and enable the body to restore its own recuperative powers.

BOWEN® THERAPY – It is a series of gentle, precise, simple non-invasive movements performed across muscle fibres and connective tissue, in succession with waiting periods, incorporated into the session, where the resting time allows the brain to assimilate, correlate and create a positive response to the area being treated. This non-invasive technique quickens the body’s healing response, which enables relaxation, increased circulation, and toxin release.

BREATH WORK – The human breath has long been honoured as a powerful pathway within the self to relieve pain, release blocked emotions, and strengthen states of spirituality. Indian “prana,” Chinese “chi” and Japanese “ki” refer to the power of breath and its basic life force energy that enable all living things and when we restrict this life force, we create disharmony and disease. BRENNAN HEALING SCIENCE (BHS) – Developed by former NASA scientist Barbara Brennan, author of Hands of Light and Light Emerging, this practice works on the human energy field, which is the foundation to create physical, emotional, and spiritual health by charging, clearing, and repairing energy pathways.

CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) – Complementary medical techniques that are used in conjunction with conventional medical therapies. Alternative medicine, in contrast, replaces conventional therapies. It includes health-care systems, treatments, and products existing outside of conventional medical practices.

CAPOEIRA – Combination of acrobatics, dance, boxing, and martial arts invented by Brazilian slaves and widely played in South America.

CAREER GUIDANCE – A counselling service to help people to identify their skills, interests, and career goals, offering support throughout several stages of professional development.

CHAKRA BALANCING – A practice of restoring energy flow within the body’s seven major energy centres through essential oils and pressure techniques to eliminate blockages and promote health and wellbeing.

CHAKRAS – Energy centres located along the spine, neck, and head in Ayurvedic tradition, each associated with specific organs and emotional states.

CHENOT BIO-ENERGETIC TREATMENT – A personalised bio-energetic therapy that utilises informational signals to restore energetic balance and optimise health.

CHENOT CONNECTIVE TISSUE MASSAGE – A deep tissue massage aimed at relieving chronic muscle tension, enhancing circulation, flexibility, and posture, and improving skin health.

CHENOT ENERGETIC MASSAGE – A treatment that utilizes suction cups to balance energy flow and improve circulation, creating relaxation and overall wellbeing.

CHENOT REGENERATING MASSAGE – A massage designed to improve breathing and release tension, helping to optimise physical relaxation and recovery.

CHENOT RELAXING MASSAGE – A soothing massage that helps relax muscles and clear the mind, aiding in recovery after physical or mental stress.

CHI NEI TSANG – A Taoist-based therapy that involves gentle abdominal massage to accelerate organ function and balance the body’s systems. Soft touch and gentle massage on the abdomen stimulate the organs to work better and create beneficial change in all the systems of the body: digestive, lymphatic, respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine, nervous, reproductive, urinary, muscular-skeletal, and the acupuncture meridian system that is the pathway for ‘chi’ or energy. The Chi Nei Tsang treatment releases deep-seated tensions and restores vitality.

CIRCUIT TRAINING – An exercise plan that uses six to ten exercises completed one after another on weight-resistance equipment to increase strength, mobility and stamina, where each exercise is performed for a certain number of repetitions.

COLD PLUNGE – A circulation-stimulation pool of frigid water designed to be utilized in combination with sauna or steam room sessions.

CRANIAL SACRAL THERAPY – A holistic, hands-on technique that involves gentle manipulation of the bones of the skull, the underlying meningeal membranes, and the nerve endings in the scalp. A practitioner is able to “listen” with their hands to what is called the cranial rhythmic impulse that runs throughout our bodies, and support balance and overall health.

COLON HYDROTHERAPY – A safe and painless cleansing process where filtered, temperature-controlled water is gently infused into the large intestine to dislodge impacted material and dilute bacteria and toxic concentrations to remove impacted material, toxins, and bacteria. Colon Hydrotherapy improves muscle tone, facilitates peristalsis action, aids digestion, and enhances nutrient absorption.

COLOUR HEALING MASSAGE – A therapeutic massage that utilises colour oils and crystals to balance energy and emotions to help an individual to achieve relaxation and overall wellbeing through colour therapy.

COURSES – Educational programs focusing on holistic practices that address mind, body, and spirit, including subjects as alternative medicine, meditation, yoga, and energy healing.

CRYOTHERAPY – A treatment involving exposure to extremely cold temperatures to stimulate the body’s circulatory, muscular, and neuroendocrine systems, providing pain relief, muscle relaxation, and improved circulation.

CRYSTAL HEALING – A healing practice that uses the energy of crystals to enhance wellbeing, utilizing their electromagnetic properties to align the body’s energy.

CUPPING – A therapy from traditional Chinese medicine that involves heated glass cups placed on the skin to create suction, and is believed to stimulate the energy flow, reduce pain, and create relaxation.

D

DEAD SEA MUD TREATMENT – Application of mineral-rich mud from the Dead Sea in Israel. It is utilized to detoxify skin and body and to alleviate painful symptoms of rheumatism and arthritis.

DIATHERMY – A deep-heat therapy that utilizes high-frequency electric currents to generate heat within body tissues. It’s commonly used by physical therapists and sports physicians to treat conditions like arthritis, bursitis, and fractures. It may also help with gynaecological diseases and sinusitis.

DMSO (Dimethyl Sulfoxide) – A solvent that can penetrate body tissues for treating interstitial cystitis, a rare bladder inflammation. It’s claimed to heal various issues such as bruises, herpes and pimples, and relieve pain from conditions like muscle strains. DMSO is also said to kill bacteria and fungi, improve circulation, and boost the immune system. It causes garlic-like breath, also when applied topically or intravenously.

DNA ANALYSIS – Any number of techniques that collect and analyse an individual’s DNA and compare it against known genetic markers to recommend lifestyle and nutritional changes.

DOCTOR OF CHIROPRACTIC (D.C.) – Chiropractors can influence the body’s nervous system and natural defence mechanisms through adjustments of the spine and joints to alleviate pain and improve general health and wellbeing. Through its effectiveness in treating back problems, traumas, headaches, and other injuries, chiropractic has become the second-largest primary healthcare field in the world.

DOSHAS – According to Ayurvedic philosophy, each person is composed of one or more doshas—Kapha, Pitta, or Vata—which are determined by the combination of the five elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. The balance of these doshas is essential for good health.

DREAM THERAPY – This refers to mental activity during the rapid-eye-movement (REM) stage of sleep. Dreams may reflect bodily disturbances or external factors. In many ancient cultures, dreams held spiritual significance. Freud believed dreams reveal insights into an individual’s psyche, while Jung saw them as expressions of the collective unconscious.

DREAMWORK® – Explores the layers of meaning within dreams, which can provide insights into physical health, emotional balance, and spiritual growth. Dreamworkers help interpret these layers and their relevance to personal life. Dreams contain metaphorical, symbolic, and archetypal language and images. Many are multilevel, with messages relevant to various aspects of one’s being: physical health, emotional wellbeing, and soul level. Dreams may contain literal information about potential future paths. Dreamwork reveals how the different dream layers relate to one’s life. The dreamer is the authority on the meaning of the dream; the dreamworker offers insights using the “if this were my dream” format. Shamanistic dreamwork includes shamanic journeying on the dream images.

DRUG THERAPY – The use of medication to alleviate symptoms of mental illnesses. For example, lithium is used for manic depression, and tranquilizers help reduce anxiety. While medications like Ritalin can be effective for conditions like hyperactivity, they can also have side effects, such as affecting physical growth.

DUO MASSAGE – A massage treatment performed by two different therapists at the same time.

E

EAR CANDLING – An alternative therapy in which a lit, tapered candle is placed in a person’s ear. The belief is that earwax and impurities are drawn out by the vacuum created by the candle’s flame.

EFT® (Emotional Freedom Techniques) – Combining cognitive therapy and exposure therapy with acupressure, EFT uses fingertip tapping on 12 acupuncture points to address issues like anxiety, phobias, PTSD, and pain. Over 20 clinical trials published in peer-reviewed medical and psychology journals have demonstrated that EFT is effective for depression, phobias, anxiety, pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other problems.

ELECTROLYSIS – A technique of lasting hair removal that involves the utilisation of electricity or radio wave energy to damage hair follicles. Sometimes this technique can require some kind of pain relief.

EMDR® (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) – An advanced, rapid therapy procedure for stress-related symptoms, traumatic memories, and to shift core beliefs. With bi-lateral stimulation of both sides of the brain, EMDR allows the brain to reprocess the experience leading to a healthy resolution and integration. The eye movements process the unconscious material like what is happening in REM or dream sleep and unlock the nervous system, which allows re-integration of positive information and outcome. Your own brain does the healing with this technology, and you are in control.

ENDERMOLOGIE – A nonsurgical treatment designed to temporarily reduce the appearance of cellulite while also releasing toxins and excess water from the body. Also known as LPG or lipomassage, it uses rollers and gentle suction to massage affected areas, resulting in smoother skin. It stimulates circulation, breaks up fat, reduces fluid retention, and activates collagen and hyaluronic acid production.

ENERGETIC HEALING SESSION – A form of energy medicine that focuses on restoring balance and harmony within the body’s energy fields. It aims to improve cell growth, repair, and overall vitality by addressing energy blockages and imbalances.

ENERGY HEALING – A holistic practice that involves working with the body’s energy fields to create healing and wellbeing. This can include modalities such as Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, and Healing Touch, which aim to balance energy, reduce stress, and promote physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health.

ENERGY MEDICINE – A therapeutic practice that uses numerous techniques to manipulate and balance the body’s energy systems to enhance health and vitality. It may include practices such as acupuncture, acupressure, energy healing, and support of digestion and other bodily functions through enzyme supplementation.

ESSENTIAL – A term used in nutrition referring to vitamins, minerals, and amino acids that the body cannot produce on its own and therefore must be taken through diet.

ESSENTIAL OILS – Concentrated plant oils used in aromatherapy and holistic treatments that are believed to carry the “essence” of the plant’s therapeutic properties.

ESSENTIAL OIL THERAPY – A treatment practice that utilizes aromatic plant extracts known as essential oils to treat physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments. These oils are applied through inhalation, topical use, massage, or baths to help alleviate symptoms like stress, pain, and infections.

EURYTHMY THERAPY – A movement therapy that balances the physical body with life and soul forces. Based on anthroposophical principles, it draws upon creative forces, cosmic rhythms, and the four elements through non-aerobic exercises. Practised for over 90 years, it addresses a range of conditions across all age groups.

EXERCISE THERAPY – A therapeutic approach that involves physical activity to help individuals recover from injuries or medical conditions, improve fitness, and maintain overall health and wellbeing. It may include strengthening, stretching, and endurance training.

EXFOLIATION – A technique to slough the top layer of dead skin cells off the face or body. Methods include dry brushing, salt glow, loofah scrubs, and ingredients such as grape seed, sugar, clay, and salt.

EXPRESSIVE THERAPIES – Therapeutic methods that use the arts (such as art, dance, music, or drama therapy) to create emotional, physical, and mental healing.

FANGO – A therapeutic treatment involving the application of therapeutic mud or clay, typically from volcanic sources, to the body. Fango is valued for its detoxifying and healing properties, particularly for musculoskeletal and skin conditions. Common in spa settings, it helps reduce inflammation and promote relaxation.

FELDENKRAIS METHOD® – A system for improving body and brain function through movement, developed by Dr Moshe Feldenkrais. It helps with chronic pain, physical limitations, and enhances movement efficiency. Used by athletes, musicians, actors, and dancers, this method centres the body, clarifies orientation in time and space, and activates new neural pathways.

FENG SHUI – The ancient Chinese art of arranging living and working spaces to create energetic balance. By positioning furniture, choosing colours, and using intentional design elements, Feng Shui aims to enhance the flow of energy or “chi” to support wellbeing, harmony, productivity, and prosperity.

FLOATATION THERAPY – A therapeutic practice in which individuals float in a sensory deprivation tank filled with Epsom salt-infused water. This creates a near-weightless environment that promotes deep relaxation, stress relief, and mental clarity.

FLOWER ESSENCES – Natural remedies made from flowers, designed to address negative emotional states that may contribute to illness. Typically taken under the tongue or mixed in a beverage, they are used to support emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

FRAGRANCE THERAPY – A form of aromatherapy that uses scents from essential oils, herbs, or flowers to support emotional wellbeing. It promotes relaxation, mental clarity, and healing through the therapeutic use of fragrance.

FRIGIDARIUM – A cold-water room in ancient Roman bathhouses used for a refreshing plunge after heat treatments. Modern versions of frigidariums serve a similar purpose, revitalising the body and closing the pores after exposure to hot environments.

GENETIC TESTING – The process of analysing a person’s genetic makeup to identify potential health risks, inherited conditions, and susceptibilities. It is commonly used to personalise treatment plans in areas such as fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle optimisation.

GLANDULARS – Freeze-dried animal gland extracts, typically derived from cows, sheep, or pigs, used in supplement form. Believed to support hormone production by supplying small amounts of specific hormones or glandular material.

GLUCOSAMINE SULFATE – A naturally occurring amino sugar found in joint cartilage. Often taken as a supplement to help repair cartilage, reduce inflammation, and ease joint pain, particularly in cases of osteoarthritis.

GOMMAGE – A gentle exfoliating and hydrating treatment using a cream-based formula applied in massage-like movements. As the product is rubbed into the skin, it lifts away dead skin cells, leaving the skin soft and renewed.

GREEVA VASTI – An Ayurvedic therapy for relieving neck pain and stiffness. It involves creating a dough ring around the neck area and filling it with warm medicated oil, which deeply penetrates the tissues, reducing inflammation and promoting healing.

GROUP THERAPY – A type of psychotherapy conducted with multiple participants. Led by a trained therapist, group members share experiences and support each other while exploring emotional issues in a safe, guided environment.

GUIDED IMAGERY – A mind-body technique that uses visualisation to evoke healing responses. By accessing stored emotions and mental imagery, individuals can transform limiting beliefs and support physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing.

GYROTONIC – A movement system combining elements of yoga, dance, gymnastics, and swimming. Performed on specialised equipment, it uses circular and spiralling motions to enhance strength, flexibility, posture, and mental focus.

HAMMAM – A traditional Turkish or Middle Eastern bathing ritual involving steam rooms of varying temperatures, used to cleanse, relax, and rejuvenate the body and mind.

HARMONYNI – A UAE-based community of holistic businesses and freelance therapists offering services that support physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

HATHA YOGA – A gentle form of yoga focusing on physical postures and controlled breathing. Suitable for beginners, it promotes flexibility, balance, and relaxation.

HEALING – The process of restoring physical, emotional, or mental health after illness, injury, or stress, often through natural or therapeutic means.

HEALING TOUCH® – An energy-based therapy where practitioners use their hands to balance and clear the human energy field, helping to reduce pain, stress, and emotional distress.

HERBAL BODY WRAPS – A detoxifying spa treatment in which the body is wrapped in a herb-infused cloth and heated, allowing the herbs to draw out toxins and rehydrate the skin.

HERBALISM – The practice of using plants and plant-based substances for healing, drawing from both Western and Eastern traditions to support the body’s natural healing processes.

HERBAL MEDICINE – The use of plant extracts, such as teas, tinctures, and powders, to prevent or treat health conditions and enhance overall wellness.

HELLERWORK – A bodywork system combining movement education and deep-tissue massage to improve posture, flexibility, and body awareness by addressing mind-body connections.

HIV THERAPIES – Treatments that support individuals with HIV/AIDS, typically used alongside conventional medical care to manage symptoms and enhance quality of life.

HOLISTIC COUNSELLING – A therapeutic approach that explores the connection between thoughts, emotions, and physical health to achieve overall balance and wellbeing.

HOLISTIC GYM – A fitness space that integrates physical training with mental, emotional, and sometimes spiritual practices to support total wellbeing.

HOLISTIC MEDICINE – An approach to healthcare that emphasises personal responsibility, the body’s self-healing ability, and balance between mind, body, spirit, and environment.

HOLISTIC SCHOOLS – Educational institutions that support students’ academic, emotional, physical, and spiritual development, aiming to nurture balanced and self-aware individuals.

HOMEOPATHY – A system of natural medicine using highly diluted substances from plants, minerals, or animals to stimulate the body’s healing response based on the “like cures like” principle.

HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY – A treatment using synthetic or natural hormones, usually oestrogen, to relieve menopausal symptoms or hormone deficiencies. Medical opinions on its risks and benefits vary.

HOT & COLD STONE MASSAGE – A therapeutic massage using alternating heated and cooled stones to relieve tension, enhance circulation, and promote relaxation.

HOT HERB POULTICE – A massage using warm muslin pouches filled with herbs, rolled and pressed onto the skin to ease muscle pain and improve circulation.

HYDRO-JET TREATMENT – A water massage technique using high-pressure jets to stimulate blood flow, tone the skin, and revitalise the body.

HYDROSOL – The aromatic water left after distilling plants for essential oils. It contains water-soluble compounds and is used in skincare and aromatherapy.

HYPERBARIC THERAPY – A treatment where individuals inhale pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, used to accelerate healing and improve oxygen delivery to tissues.

Hypno-Birthing® – A childbirth method using deep relaxation and visualisation techniques to reduce fear, stress, and discomfort during labour.

HYPNOSIS – A focused, trance-like state of relaxation that heightens suggestibility, often used to manage stress, improve habits, or enhance mental clarity.

HYPNOTHERAPY – A therapeutic use of hypnosis to address emotional, behavioural, or physical issues such as addiction, chronic pain, phobias, or anxiety.

INDIBA – A therapy that stimulates tissue rejuvenation by enhancing cellular metabolism and microcirculation, reducing swelling and improving skin elasticity.

INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE – An Ayurvedic massage focusing on the neck, shoulders, scalp, and upper back to relieve tension, boost circulation, and promote mental clarity.

INFRA-RED THERAPY – A treatment using infrared light to penetrate deep tissues, supporting detoxification, pain relief, and healing.

INFRARED SAUNA – Heat therapy that uses infrared rays to detoxify the body, improve circulation, and aid absorption of therapeutic oils.

JIN SHIN JYUTSU – A Japanese healing art based on applying light touch to specific points on the body to harmonise the flow of energy, reduce stress, and enhance overall wellbeing.

KALARI MASSAGE – Kalari is a very intense Ayurvedic massage done with the feet, it reactivates, revitalises, deeply stimulates, and dissolves fatigue.

KARUNA REIKI® – A healing system combining traditional Reiki with advanced techniques to promote deep healing, emotional release, and spiritual growth. It uses specific symbols and methods to address trauma and pain.

KATI VASTI – (Kati, means the lower back; Vasti, means herbal enemas) is an Ayurvedic herbal bath treatment that makes use of heat and oil to pacify your dosha. A small well with herbal paste is created on your lower back, into which medicated Ayurvedic oil is poured and left to soak into the skin. The medicinal properties are absorbed directly by the body and help to treat inflammation, stiffness, and pain in the back area.

KETO – A low-carb, high-fat regime often used for weight-loss where the body converts fat into Ketones for energy.

LACONIUM – A room where a gentle, dry heat radiates to warm up the body slowly. The room could also be referred to as a “dry sauna” but with a soft or gentle heat.

LAPA’AU – A traditional Hawaiian healing practice used for thousands of years in Polynesia. During the healing session the practitioner becomes a bridge for healing, connecting the spirit of one or more Lapa’au Kahunas, the client, and the energies of the client’s Aumakua (personal guardian spirits). The client’s energy is balanced, distorted thought forms (that may result in illness) are removed, and energy links draining the client are disconnected. This process rebalances the client’s energy and removes negative thought patterns and energy links that may cause illness. When the client is a healer, the work takes place under the guidance of a higher level of Aumakua on multiple planes at the same time. The healer’s energy level is optimised for their own unique characteristics and abilities. .

LASER THERAPY – The use of pulsed frequencies in light form to support healing and regeneration.

LAUGHTER THERAPY – A therapeutic practice that uses laughter as a tool for stress relief, emotional balance, and physical health. It promotes the release of endorphins and improves overall wellbeing.

LAZINESS DETOX – A method to combat chronic procrastination or inactivity by promoting mental and physical rejuvenation, often through lifestyle changes, self-reflection, and structured plans.

LIFESTYLE MEDICINE – A medical approach that focuses on preventing, treating, and even reversing chronic diseases through lifestyle changes, including diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep improvement.

LIGHT BOX – a set of bright, full-spectrum light bulbs inside a box with a reflective background and diffusing screen; produces light that’s 10 to 20 times stronger than ordinary indoor light. Used to treat winter depression, or SAD (seasonal affective disorder). Treatment typically involves spending 15 minutes to 3 hours in front of a light box every day in the fall, winter, and early spring. Research suggests that bright lights help regulate the body’s internal clock, which controls hormone secretion and sleep patterns.

LIGHT-EMITTING DIODES (LEDs) – Tiny light sources (frequently used in digital watches and electronic equipment) that have been used in the field of phototherapy. Their power output is low enough to be safe for human exposure but strong enough to stimulate the biological responses involved in healing. Research indicates that LEDs may accelerate the healing of skin wounds and certain other conditions.

LITHOTHERAPY – A therapeutic practice using stones and minerals to heal the body and mind. It is based on the belief that the natural vibrations of stones can positively impact a person’s energy field.

LPG – This treatment stimulates the skin and fatty tissues to soften and make them less fibrous. at the same time, it also helps to release fat and improve lymphatic circulation, which gives skin back its smooth tone, resulting in firmer, dimple-free skin. The skin identity sensor adapts the treatment to each individual’s skin type.

LOMILOMI MASSAGE® – Hawaiian for “rub rub”, Lomilomi is a massage technique that’s been handed down from ancient Hawaiian healers. The stroke used are similar to the shiatsu technique of Japan but are gentler and shorter. Pressure with the fingers at certain points is also part of the technique but is it of shorter duration than most acupressure. Two identifying techniques of authentic Lomilomi are the emphasis on spirit-body connection and the use of the forearm and elbow as massage tools.

MARMA THERAPY – This traditional ayurvedic massage uses herbal ayurvedic oil and appropriate pressure to stimulate marma points. It helps to cleanse blocked energy, also called prana, by either arousing or calming the doshas. Each marma point has three receptors that align with the three doshas. During a marma-point massage, the points are stroked in a deliberate sequence using specific essential oils.

MEDICAL INTUITIVE – A practitioner using Medical Intuition can provide insights into what is happening within a client’s body by paying close attention to presenting symptoms. This approach offers valuable information about the root causes of conditions, emotional and spiritual factors, and what the body needs for healing. The body offers much information to be shared such as the roots and influences of the present condition, what it wants and does not want and a physical, emotional/spiritual portrait of what is currently going on.

MEDITATION – A practice of mindfulness and concentration aimed at calming the mind, reducing stress, and promoting overall mental and emotional wellbeing. Various forms include mindfulness, transcendental, and guided meditation.

MEDITERRANEAN DIET – A heart-healthy diet based on the traditional eating habits of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, emphasizing fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats like olive oil.

MELATONIN – hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain and released mainly at night in the absence of light on the retina. Regulates the onset and timing of sleep and seasonal changes in the body such as winter weight gain. Levels of melatonin decline with age. Melatonin is being investigated as a sleep promoter and to prevent or reduce jet lag. Synthetic melatonin and melatonin derived from bovine pineal glands are available as over-the-counter dietary supplements. Melatonin occurs naturally in some foods but in fairly small amounts. Reported side effects include reduced fertility, inhibition of male sexual drive, hypothermia, damage to the retina. Some physicians and scientists advise against taking melatonin as a long-term supplement.

MERIDIAN – According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is an energetic highway in the human body. Meridians allow for the flow of energy, known as Qi (pronounced “chee”), to circulate throughout the body. Meridians exist in corresponding pairs and each meridian has multiple acupuncture points along the pathway.

MERIDIAN THERAPY – Meridian Therapy is a holistic healing approach that focuses on the body’s energy pathways, known as meridians. These meridians are believed to be channels through which vital energy, or “Qi,” flows Based on traditional Chinese medicine, this therapy involves stimulating the body’s energy meridians with needles to promote healing and balance. MOXIBUSTION – A heat therapy that uses dried plant materials called ‘moxa’ that are burned near the skin with the aim of treating pain.

NABI BASTI – This Ayurvedic treatment is a warm oil stomach treatment for improving digestion and releasing deep-rooted emotions by bathing the navel in healing oils.

NASYA KARMA – Medicated oils, herbal extracts, powders, etc. are administered through the nasal orifices in a specific dose and for a specific duration. This treatment is effective for chronic sinusitis, chronic headaches, migraine, facial paralysis, nasal congestion, and diseases of the eye, nose, ear, mouth, and head. It is one of the five cleansing actions involved in panchakarma.

NATUROPATHY – A natural healing system focused on assessing and promoting health through natural approaches. Naturopathy is an art that emphasises a healthy lifestyle, disease prevention, and treating physiological and mental conditions using nature-based philosophy and therapeutics. a system of Natural Healing which, only through natural methods, assesses and cares for the health of the patient. It uses natural therapeutics in the treating of human conditions such as: Pain, Injury, and any Physical, Chemical or Mental conditions. Naturopathy uses a philosophy of

NEUROMUSCULAR RE-EDUCATION (NMR) – Neuromuscular re-education addresses the retraining the brain and spinal cord in voluntary and reflex motor activities.

NEUROMUSCULAR THERAPY – Also known as trigger point myotherapy, it focuses on putting pressure on specific “myofascial” points in your body to relieve pain. See also Trigger Point Myotherapy.

NEURAC TREATMENT – An effective methodology for musculoskeletal pain and neuromuscular dysfunction that involves therapeutic exercises in suspension slings.

NEUROTOPIC INJECTION – This treatment involves dozens of injections of small amounts (0.5 cc or less) of sterile saline solution (0.9 percent salt) into the muscles at both sides of the spine near the places where the nerves enter into the back muscles.

NEW AGE MEDICINE – This is a broad term for complementary and alternative therapies, often incorporating spiritual approaches.

NEARFIELD INFRA-RED / RED LIGHT THERAPY – This is used for wound healing, skin disorders, and for exciting the cellular milieu, encouraging healing processes.

NETI – A therapeutic practice of cleansing the nasal passages with saline water (also known as Jala-Neti); an important means of eliminating excess dust, mucus, pollen, and other blockages from the nasal passages. A neti pot is a vessel used to pour the saline solution into one nostril so that it can flow out through the other nostril.

NETRA TARPANA – This treatment involves lukewarm medicated ghee that is poured into circular frames made of powdered Masha paste, placed around the eyes. This assists to rejuvenate tired, stressed, dehydrated eyes and disorderly eyesight.

NEUROFEEDBACK® – A process using EEG-based feedback to improve brain function permanently. Through consistent audio or visual cues, the brain learns to regulate itself, addressing conditions such as anxiety, depression, ADHD, tics, headaches, sleep issues, brain dysregulation and more without continued equipment reliance. Over time, the learning endures without continued use of an instrument. The first use of neurofeedback enabled people to be free of seizures without medication or surgery.

NLP® (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) – Neuro-Linguistic Patterning is a useful model of beliefs and techniques that offer a way to use the mind and body to achieve excellence in learning business, relationships, counselling, sports and other experiences of life.

NOSODE – a homeopathic remedy made from diseased tissue or bodily secretions rather than from a plant or animal and is used to stimulate an immune response. Taken like a homeopathic immunisation to build up an immune response against a specific disease. Nosodes are often named for the disease present in the material they were made from – for example, the flu nosode and the infectious mononucleosis nosode.

NUMEROLOGY – A standalone science of interpreting the numbers present in one’s personal birth blueprint, year cycles, dates, and names. It is a necessary component of astrology, though often not combined. ORTHO-BIONOMY – The suffix “ortho” comes from Greek and means to return to a straight or upright condition. Ortho-bionomy is used to alleviate chronic pain linked to injuries, muscle and joint problems, and arthritis. It reduces stress, increases circulation, enhances relaxation, and improves posture or structural alignment issues. Its gentle techniques are recommended for acute pain and injury rehabilitation. Ortho-bionomy is often incorporated into other healing treatments—for example, massage therapists may use it to relieve knotted muscles, sore muscle cramps, back pain, and headaches.

ORTHOMOLECULAR THERAPY – Derived from the Greek “ortho,” meaning straight or correct, orthomolecular therapy is an alternative medicine approach focused on optimising health through nutritional supplementation. It is based on the idea that an optimal nutritional environment in the body is key to health, and diseases may reflect deficiencies or imbalances in this environment.

OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE – A branch of conventional medicine focusing on the musculoskeletal system and the belief that all body systems work interdependently. Osteopathic physicians (DOs or osteopaths) often emphasise that disturbances in the musculoskeletal system can affect overall health. They may use osteopathic manipulation, a hands-on technique system designed to alleviate pain, restore function, and promote wellbeing.

OZONE THERAPY – The use of ozone (O₃) for its antibacterial and healing properties, administered in various forms such as orally, intravenously, or by anal insufflation. It helps fight bacteria and pathogens, supports the body in combating infections, and may enhance cellular response to cancerous cells.

PANCHAKARMA – Succession of cleansing and purifying treatments from Ayurveda, that uses herbs, nutrition, massage and meditative techniques to restore the body’s own ability to promote health and wellbeing.

PATHAGANJALY – In this massage, the therapist uses their feet to give a full body massage with the client reclined on the floor. Heated oil is applied and massaged into the muscles with the therapist’s hands and feet.

PEMF THERAPY – Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field therapy used for injury healing, cellular revitalization, strains and revivification of cellular areas. Normally connected to a device, small patches are placed on the patient…sometimes a PEMF blanket is used.

PET THERAPY – The therapeutic use of pets to improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance wellbeing. A therapeutic approach based on the idea that expressing affection for a pet helps people feel happier, maintain a positive outlook, and therefore improve their health. According to several studies, having a pet can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and ward off loneliness and depression. Many nursing homes and some prisons have developed pet therapy programs, with excellent results.

PETRISSAGE – Are massage movements with applied pressure which are deep and compress the underlying muscles. Kneading, wringing, skin rolling and pick-up-and-squeeze are the petrissage movements.

PHOTOTHERAPY – This is a type of medical treatment that involves exposure to fluorescent light bulbs or other sources of light like halogen lights, sunlight, and light emitting diodes (LEDs) to treat various medical conditions.

PHYSIATRY – Physical medicine and rehabilitation, also known as physiatry, is a branch of medicine that aims to enhance and restore functional ability and quality of life to people with physical impairments or disabilities.

PHYTOTHERAPY – Meaning “plant” therapy, this is a term for healing treatments using botanical products (plants, herbs, seaweeds and essential oils). Generally used for massage, wraps, baths, inhalation and tea.

PHYTO-MUD THERAPY – A therapeutic mud wrap enriched with essential oils and minerals for detoxification and revitalization. This involves the application of a body wrap that consists of a mixture of white or green clay, enriched with microalgae and pure essential oils. The combined effect of essential oils and minerals further drains, detoxifies and revitalises the body, and is particularly helpful to eliminate physical and psychological tension.

PICHU THERAPY – An Ayurvedic treatment involving warm oil applied with a cotton pad to relieve pain. See also SHIRO PICHU.

PILATES – A movement therapy that uses a method of physical exercise to strengthen and build control of muscles, especially those used for posture. Awareness of breathing and precise control of movements are integral components of this approach.

PINDA SWEDA – This is an age-old Ayurvedic massage therapy that uses warm medicated oils in a cloth bag. The bag is made from fine cloth and the composition of medicated oils and herbs inside is customized based on the health condition to be treated. The bag with herbal concoction is placed on the joints, muscles, and tendons to reduce pain, inflammation, increase joint mobility, remove toxins, and get relief from stress and strain.

PIZZICHILLI – An ayurvedic oil treatment in which oil is poured onto the body through a hose and massaged into the body. This is the heaviest oil treatment and therefore the most nourishing.

POLARITY THERAPY – Polarity therapy is based on the belief that all energy in the body is based in electro-magnetic energy and that illness is a symptom of loss of this energy. Treatment to correct energy flows includes forms of massage, movement and yoga-type exercises. Origins: Austrian-American chiropractor, osteopath, and naturopath Randolph Stone (1888-1981) based his theories on Ayurvedic principles. It’s based on a theory of energy flow in the body that asserts that balancing the flow of energy in the body is the foundation of health. Specific points along the currents are said to hold positive or negative energies. Practitioners use gentle touch and guidance in diet, exercise and self-awareness to help clients balance their energy flow, thus supporting a return to health.

PRANAYAMA – Pranayama is a system of breathing techniques used to harness and manipulate universal energy known as prana. The term is derived from several Sanskrit roots; prana meaning “vital life force,” yama meaning “control” and ayama meaning “extension” or “expansion.” It helps to clear the physical and emotional obstacles in our body to free the breath and so the flow of prana – life energy.

PRANIC HEALING – A highly evolved and tested system of energy medicine developed by GrandMaster Choa Kok Sui, utilising “prana” or life force to balance, harmonise and transform the body’s energy processes. This invisible bioenergy or vital energy keeps the body alive and maintains a state of good health.

PROBIOTICS – Substances such as acidophilus and bifidus that restore the beneficial bacteria normally present in the intestines. Stress, poor diet, antibiotics, and oral contraceptives can throw off the normal balance of bacteria and fungi. This imbalance may be manifested as a yeast infection, or in symptoms such as diarrhoea or gastrointestinal disturbances.

PROGRESSIVE RELAXATION – A technique used to relieve tension and stress by systematically tensing and relaxing successive muscle groups.

QI GONG (CHI-KUNG) – This ancient Chinese exercise system aims to stimulate and balance the flow of qi (chi), or vital energy, along the acupuncture meridians, or energy pathways. Qi gong is used to reduce stress, improve blood circulation, enhance immune function, and treat a variety of health conditions. This philosophy is based on the idea that specific points on the feet and hands correspond with organs and tissues throughout the body. With fingers and thumbs, the practitioner applies pressure to these points to treat a wide range of stress-related illnesses and ailments.

RAINDROP THERAPY – The application of therapeutic-grade essential oils using massage and vita flex techniques to promote physical and emotional healing, this therapy strengthens immunity, aids detoxification, and restores balance to the body. Raindrop Therapy aids in the healing of physical and emotional injuries, strengthens the immune system, detoxifies the body, and helps to bring the body into physical and electrical alignment.

RASUL – A traditional Arabian body treatment that involves steam and mud. Mineral-rich muds of various colours are applied to the skin. You sit in a tiled steam room for around 15 minutes, then the mud is washed off with cool water. You will sweat out toxins and be left feeling both relaxed and wide awake.

REBIRTHING – also known as conscious-connected breathing or vivation. A technique in which the therapist guides clients through breathing exercises to help them re-experience past memories, including birth, and let go of emotional tensions stored in the body.

THE RECONNECTION™ – A process that realigns the body’s energy grid with universal frequencies, supporting healing and personal evolution. It reconnects individuals to their purpose and facilitates expansion at a deeper level. Originally the meridian lines, sometimes called acupuncture lines, on our bodies were connected to the grid lines that encircle the earth. These grid lines were designed to continue outward and connect us to a vastly larger grid, tying us into the entire universe. Over time, we became disconnected from these lines. The Reconnection brings in “new” axiatonal lines that reconnect us to these grid lines. The unique vibratory levels and frequencies they bring in contribute to healing through the reconnection of DNA strands, and ultimately our personal evolution by providing the means to reconnect with our purpose.

RECONNECTIVE HEALING – A cutting-edge system of connecting with frequencies to heal the body, mind, and spirit. Often requiring only 1–3 sessions, it harmonises the body without targeting specific symptoms, addressing the core requirements for healing. These energies, currently being researched by Dr. J. Schwartz at the University of Arizona, are highly palpable and continue working long after the healing session has ended. Initiated without specific intention they result in the healing of what your body truly needs, not necessarily what you requested or expected. After the initial one to three sessions, there is no need to return for additional work on that particular issue or illness.

REFLEXOLOGY –The application of pressure, stretch and movement to the feet, hands and ears to effect corresponding parts of the body. Reflexologists view the feet, ears and hands as a mirror image of the body. By applying the technique, a reflexologist can break up patterns of stress in other parts of the body. Stress is a barrier to the body’s return to a normal state of equilibrium.

REGRESSION – psychological defence mechanism, viewed as a return to an earlier mode of behaviour, thought, or feeling. The unconscious process that helps the mind resolve conflicts or lessen anxiety by returning to forms of gratification previously abandoned.

REIKI –A therapy based on Eastern concepts of energy flow and the seven energy centres in the human body. The purpose of treatment is to heal emotional, mental, spiritual, and physical issues through the transmission of universal life energy, called “ki” in Japanese. It is believed that “ki” flows throughout the universe, and that Reiki connects humans in a more direct way to this universal source. Reiki is applied to humans, animals, and plants to promote healing and deepen the connection to this life force.

RESTORATIVE YOGA – Restorative yoga is a type of yoga known for its relaxing, calming and healing effect. It is a gentle, slow, still style of yoga that involves long, passive holds in a series of 4-6 restful poses. Yogis are often supported by props to enhance or deepen their experience and achieve a state of total relaxation and release. The intention is to relax as far as possible into the postures, using as little physical effort as possible.

RIFE THERAPY – Use of researched frequencies to shatter the cell walls of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. It is also supportive of frequencies for key physical functions.

ROLFING® STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION – A deep tissue methodology that reorganises the body’s posture and movement. This system enhances alignment and comfort within gravity, promoting structural balance. It is a holistic, hands-on, deep tissue modality that manipulates and changes the myofascial system throughout the body. Through educated touch and movement education, a client’s posture and structure, their whole being is reorganised within the field of gravity.

RUBENFELD SYNERGY METHOD – gentle touch, movement, verbal exchange, and imagination used to access memories and emotions locked in the body. It integrates elements of the Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method, Gestalt and Hypnotherapy and combines bodywork and psychotherapy. It may be used for physical or emotional problems or for personal growth.

SALT THERAPY – Also known as halotherapy (‘halo’ is the Greek word for salt), salt therapy involves simply breathing in the salty air. You can experience this natural treatment in a spa in a salt-steam room or salt cave, where the steam is infused with salt and sometimes essential oils.

SAND BATH – The origins of sand therapy or sand bath go back to ancient times. Ancient Greeks and Romans treated rheumatisms by immersing the patient’s body, from the chest to the feet, into hot sand. However, it also helps with the consolidation of fractures, speeds up healing of dislocations and sprains.

SAUNA – DRY HEAT THERAPY – A sauna is an enclosed wood room in which people aim to relax in dry heat. It provides benefits for cardiovascular health that resemble those derived from exercise. There’s also evidence that saunas decrease inflammation, boost the immune system, and reduce certain signs of physical stress.

SCOTCH HOSE – Is an invigorating hydrotherapy treatment, where the use of alternating warm and cool water, through a high-velocity water wand (or hose), is controlled by a body treatment specialist. Scotch hose units work to speed up the client’s metabolism through hot and cold pressurized water and direct contact to the client’s specific points of pressure.

SELF-ACTUALISATION – Fully realising one’s individual human potential.

SELF-AWARENESS – Self-conscious state of focusing attention on oneself.

SHAMANISM – A spiritual system common to many indigenous cultures, where shamans connect to spirit realms for guidance and healing. They retrieve soul parts and tap into universal wisdom for personal and collective healing. The shaman acquires knowledge, wisdom and spiritual power from personal helping spirits encountered on journeys into other realities and they return with vital information about healing. Shamans are considered “walkers between the worlds” and retrievers of souls.

SHARK CARTILAGE – A supplement touted as a cancer treatment. Sharks, whose frames are composed of cartilage not bone, get cancer infrequently. Proponents of this treatment claim sharks get cancer infrequently because something in their cartilage inhibits the ability of tumours to create the blood supply needed to continue growing. Shark cartilage is also promoted as an immune system stimulant and remedy for joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.

SHIATSU® – A Japanese form of physical therapy and therapeutic massage, based on traditional Chinese medicine. It combines massage, gentle physical manipulation, and pressure along channels or rivers of energy called meridians to promote balance and health.

SHIRO PICHU – In this procedure, a piece of cotton or natural cloth is dipped in oil and kept on either head or on certain other parts of the body for a stipulated period of time. It is useful in many stress-related mental disorders (Mano Roga) as well as geriatric diseases, muscular stiffness and neurological conditions.

SHIRO VASTI – Shiro Vasti (Shiro, means the head; Vasti, means herbal enemas) is an Ayurvedic herbal bath treatment that uses heat and oil to pacify your dosha. A small well with herbal paste is created on your head, into which medicated Ayurvedic oil is poured and left to soak into the skin. The medicinal properties are absorbed directly by the body and help to treat chronic or acute pain.

SHIRODHARA – (Shiro = head and Dhara = flow) is an Ayurvedic treatment. This warm oil is drizzled on the forehead in a constant flow onto the “third eye” chakra – the intuitive energetic centre. It reduces stress and induces a state of deep relaxation and helps relieve insomnia, fears, stress headaches, anxieties, and other nervous system disorders.

SOMATIC EXPERIENCING (SE) – A therapeutic method that uses awareness techniques to address trauma by restoring balance to the body’s nervous system. It supports recovery from physical pain anxiety, depression, and PTSD. It is designed for the treatment of trauma and associated symptoms, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. SE uses gentle self-awareness techniques to direct the energy of the nervous system in a way that corrects imbalances and restores its natural equilibrium. This results in reduced activation in the body and mind, bringing a greater sense of relief, balance and aliveness. SE is effective in the treatment of emotional, mental and physical symptoms of trauma including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, and syndromes such as fibromyalgia. SE is used around the world to assist people recover from trauma, including accidents, disasters, and war.

SOUND THERAPY/VIBRATIONAL HEALING – A range of therapies in which sound is used to treat physical and mental conditions based on the theory that all of life vibrates, including people’s bodies. Treatment by sound waves is believed to restore that healthy balance to the body. The healing sound is transmitted to the affected area of the body and may be produced by any number of methods including voice, chanting bowls, bell, drums, tuning forks and/or music. A varied approach using sound waves to promote healing and to restore balance to the body.

SPIROMETRY – Evaluation of the condition of the lung function.

STEAM BATH – Steam room therapy has been shown to reduce blood pressure and keep the heart healthier, as well as help to repair broken skin tissue caused by wounds, such as ulcers.

STRUCTURAL EXAM/DIAGNOSIS – An osteopathic diagnostic technique that involves a visual, hands-on assessment by an osteopathic physician of the skeleton, joints, muscles, ligaments, and tendons.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION – A systematic approach to relieving patterns of stress and impaired functioning, structural integration seeks to correct misalignments in the body created by gravity and physical and psychological trauma. As in Rolfing, in ten sessions the practitioner uses hands, arms, and elbows to apply pressure to the fascia, or connective tissue, while the client participates through directed breathing.

SUBLUXATION – In chiropractic, a misalignment of bones within joints said to interfere with the flow of nervous impulses and diminish the body’s ability to stay healthy.

SWEDENA – An ayurvedic treatment in which herbal roots, leaves and other raw materials are boiled in water. The whole body is exposed to the medicated steam for a prescribed period of time. It is highly beneficial for neurological and degenerative conditions, muscular pains and overweight conditions.

SWEDISH MASSAGE – Swedish massage uses softer strokes on the bonier and more delicate parts of the body, and stronger strokes where there is thicker muscle coverage. This adjustment of pressure makes it an ideal massage for relaxation. Besides calming benefits, Swedish massage is thought to be good for easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins improving circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood, helping to keep ligaments and tendons flexible and reducing emotional and physical stress.

Tai Chi – Tai Chi combines movement, meditation and breath regulation to improve the flow of vital energy in the body, enhance blood circulation, and boost immune functions. Tai Chi is one of the most broadly applicable systems of self-care in the world. In China, it is estimated that 200 million people practice Tai Chi every day.

TELOMERE LENGTH EVALUATION – Telomeres, the protective caps found at the end of chromosomes in all living creatures, regulate the cellular ageing process and are therefore responsible for ageing in human beings, but also have been shown to play a major role in the development of virtually all ageing-related diseases. This test is the most accurate indicator of cellular ageing, with a wide range of applications aimed at the prevention of age-related diseases like cardiovascular diseases or cancer, due to the close relationship between these diseases and the telomere length.

TEMAZCAL – Also known as sweat lodge, is a traditional steam bath used by indigenous Mexican and Central Americans consisting of a domelike structure built around a pit where water is poured over hot rocks. It induces sweating, relaxation, and detoxification.

TENDINO MUSCLE TEST – Tendon reflex tests are used to determine the integrity of the spinal cord and peripheral nervous system, and they can be used to determine the presence of a neuromuscular disease.

TENS UNIT – Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a method of pain relief involving the use of a mild electrical current. A TENS machine is a small, battery-operated device that has leads connected to sticky pads called electrodes.

TEPIDARIUM – A warm room or heated lounge area where guests prepare for bathing. The term dates back to Roman Times.

THAI MASSAGE – Thai massage or Thai yoga massage is a traditional healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. It incorporates the idea of Shen-lines also known as energy lines.

THALASSOTHERAPY – From the Greek word for sea: Thalassa and the Greek word for treatment: Therapia – Thalassotherapy utilises seawater and seawater products such as seaweed and algae. Treatments are taken to prevent and improve specific conditions especially in the locomotive, cardiovascular and nervous systems as well as in the skin itself. Thalassotherapy also offers specific programs such as weight loss, anti-stress, anti-cellulite, leg fatigue as well as holistic and cosmetic treatments.

THERAPEUTICAL TOUCH – A healing method that uses non-invasive, holistic approach to healing energy-based techniques to balance psychological, physical, mental, and emotional systems. It alleviates pain, promotes healing, and induces relaxation and stimulates the own recuperative powers. It is a modern form of laying-on-of-hands and is based on principles of an energy exchange between people. It is most useful to promote healing, reduce or eliminate pain, and elicit a relaxation response.

THERMAL THERAPY – Heat therapy, also called thermotherapy, is the use of heat in therapy, such as for pain relief and health. It can take the form of a hot cloth, hot water bottle, ultrasound, hydrocollator packs, heating pad, cordless FIR heat therapy wraps, whirlpool baths, and others.

THEATAHEALING® – An energy healing approach utilising Theta brainwaves to clear negative beliefs, improve wellbeing, and enhance spiritual connections. It is a powerful Energy Healing modality using Theta brainwaves and the creative power of the Universe to heal the physical body and to clear negative beliefs & fears held in the muscular tissue and organs. TIBETAN HEALING BOWLS THERAPY – An ancient healing technique traditionally used by the Lamas or Buddhist masters, which works on the damaged areas of the body through sounds and vibrations. It unloads and releases physical or emotional tension, thus favouring an internal state of peace.

TISANE – Tisane was the original name for herbal tea. The word arrived, via French, from Greek, when it meant a herbal hot drink made from pearl barley. There are many different types of herbal teas and they address or alleviate a number of conditions. Camomile is one of the oldest.

TONIC – herbal remedy made from herbs taken to maintain health or ward off illness, rather than to treat an illness. Also known as a normalizer.

TONING – In sound healing, projection of a nonverbal sound to balance the body’s energy fields.

TRAGER THERAPY – Trager therapy is based on the premise that discomfort, pain and reduced function are physical symptoms of accumulated tension that result from accidents, weak posture, fear, emotional blockages and daily stress. It focuses on reducing these unnatural patterns of movement and eliminating neuromuscular tension by using gentle, rhythmic rocking motions. These rhythmic movements can create a state of deep relaxation, which therapists say can allow the body and mind to achieve a state of balance and integration.

TRATAKA – Means “to gaze steadily.” Trataka is a practice similar to mindful meditation which comes from ancient yogic visual concentration practices. Ritual-like, the practice of staring at a fixed point or flame.

TRIGGER POINT MYOTHERAPY – Practitioners of this technique apply pressure to specific points on the body to relieve tension. Trigger points are tender, congested spots on muscle tissue that may radiate pain to other areas. Although this technique is similar to shiatsu or acupressure, it uses Western anatomy and physiology as its basis. Please see also Neuromuscular Therapy.

TRIGGER POINT THERAPY – A technique which seeks to free the body from the grip of tight connective tissue to restore normal alignment and function and to reduce pain. Mild, sustained pressure is applied in order to gently stretch and soften the tissue. Trigger point therapy is used to treat neck and back pain, headaches, sports injuries, and other conditions.

TRX – An effective exercise which uses 2 straps and helps to build muscle combining strength with cardio training.

TUINA – Originated in ancient China and is believed to be the oldest system of bodywork. Tuina massage stimulates the flow of qi to promote balance and harmony within the body using many of the same principles of acupuncture. Chinese therapy used to balance energy in the body and release toxins with massage and acupressure techniques. It is an important component of traditional Chinese medicine.

UDWARTANA – An Ayurvedic body massage that uses a paste made of ground grains to cleanse the skin, improve circulation, and help weight loss.

ULTRASOUND THERAPY – The use of sound waves above the range of human hearing is used to treat muscle pains. It is generally used among physical therapists and the treatment can be utilised in different intensities and frequencies of sound. It all comes down to the basic principle of stimulating or provoking tissue.

VAMPIRE FACIAL – A facial treatment incorporating an application of platelet-rich plasma.

VELA SHAPE – A painless, non-invasive procedure that works by using radiofrequency, infrared light, and vacuum technologies. This is an effective way to reduce fatty deposits in areas such as the thighs, buttocks, waist, and abdomen. Reduces cellulite and even reduces the circumference of your thighs by an average of 1 inch.

VICHY SHOWER – Usually combined with a wrap or scrub, multiple showerheads spray down from above while the client reclines on a special table.

VINYASA FLOW YOGA – Vinyasa flow yoga focuses on syncing movements of the body with the breath. Practitioners will flow from one pose to another, linking poses with ‘vinyasas,’ which are smooth and uniform transitions.

VIRECHANA KARMA – This is an oral administration of herbs – either by capsule or concoction, depending on which medicine should be administered for your dosha makeup. This is followed by an abdominal massage.

VISCERAL MANIPULATION (VM) – A gentle manual therapy technique that assesses and treats the relationship between the body’s organs and other structures like muscles, fascia, ligaments, and joints.

VITA FLEX – A manual stimulation at specific reflex points in the body to produce therapeutic electrical voltages and currents based upon the piezoelectric properties of the human skin. Essential oils are also used in conjunction with the therapist’s hand movements.

VITAL MIX SOLUTIONS – Specially formulated solutions that consist of strong doses of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to effectively increase the defense of the body against increased levels of free radicals.

Watsu – Aquatic bodywork that involves stretching and Shiatsu which is applied while being floated in warm water. The water temperature (35 – 36.1 C) is ideal for experiencing a sensation of deep relaxation. Gentle stretching augments flexibility and strengthens muscles.

WET WRAP THERAPY – A treatment for moderate to severe eczema that involves putting the patient in a warm bath for about 10 to 20 minutes. Then patting the skin dry and applying topical medication to eczema-affected areas and moisturizer to non-affected areas.

WRAP THERAPY – Combines body wraps with therapeutic masks (herbal pastes, mineral-rich muds, or soothing creams) with thermal coverings. The body mask will contain a mixture of ingredients designed to have a remedial effect on the skin, while the coverings will promote muscle relaxation and sweating to cleanse the pores.

YANTRA – A geometric image based in the tantric yoga tradition. One can use it for meditation, concentration, energy alignment, inspiration, and transformation. YIN YOGA – Developed in the early 1970s, based on the Chinese Taoist philosophy of being at one with everything and in harmony with your own nature. The deeply relaxing poses are typically held for between 3-10 minutes, allowing for a deeper release.

YOGA NIDRA – A state of consciousness between waking and sleeping, typically induced by a guided meditation. It is believed that one hour of yoga Nidra is equivalent to three hours of regular sleep.

YOGA THERAPY – A personalised adaptation of Yoga aimed at relieving specific physical and emotional challenges. Techniques are chosen according to the individual client to resolve pain and blockages by supporting and nurturing the spine, bones, nervous system, joints, muscles, subtle channels, and the mind. While therapeutic approaches vary by yoga style, all promote non-invasive techniques that utilize yoga poses, breath, and wisdom for increasing prana (life force), tejas (energy) and ojas (resilience).

ZERO BALANCING – A method for aligning body structure and body energy. Through touch akin to acupressure, the practitioner seeks to overcome imbalances in the structure/energetic interface of the body, which is said to exist beneath the level of conscious awareness. Zero balancing is often used for stress reduction.
